Implementing the provisions of the Law on Electronic Communications the Communications Regulatory Authority of the Republic of Lithuania (RRT) collected the data from electronic communications operators and service providers on their activities carried out in the 3rd quarter of 2011. The prepared overview about the electronic communications sector is published on the webpage of RRT at www.rrt.lt.
During the 3rd quarter the number of subscribers of digital television grew by 6.8 per cent, during the year – by 22.7 per cent. At the end of the 3rd quarter of 2011 317.5 thousand or 48.8 per cent of all the pay-TV subscribers used digital television services, including 82.9 thousand using cable and microwave multi-channel distribution system networks, 79.0 thousand using IPTV, 83.7 thousand using satellite television and 71.9 thousand – digital terrestrial television (DVB-T) services. Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2011, in the 3rd quarter of 2011 the revenues, received from the provision of digital television increased by 9.5 per cent and amounted to LTL 26.44 million.
Compared to the revenues, received in the 2nd quarter of 2011, the revenues, received from the provision of Internet services during the 3rd quarter of 2011 decreased by 1.9 per cent and amounted to LTL 100.59 million and comparing the 3rd quarter of 2011 to the 3rd quarter of 2010 they reduced by 1.7 per cent.
The revenues, received from the provision of public mobile telecommunication networks and services during the 3rd quarter of 2011 amounted to LTL 239.32 million, including LTL 5.40 million (2.3 per cent), received by the service providers, who did not have their own network. Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2011, the total revenues, received during the 3rd quarter of 2011 decreased by 1.1 per cent and the revenues, received by the service providers, who did not have their own network, grew by 1.9 per cent. Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2010, in the 3rd quarter of 2011 the mobile telecommunications market (in terms of revenues) decreased by 6.2 per cent. Compared to the previous quarter, the duration of calls, originated in public mobile telecommunication operators’ networks during the 3rd quarter of 2011, decreased by 1.2 per cent and amounted to 1822.02 million minutes. Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2010, the total duration of the calls, originated in public mobile telecommunication networks in the 3rd quarter of 2011 grew by 4.6 per cent.
The revenues, received during the 3rd quarter of 2011 from the provision of public fixed telecommunications networks and services amounted to LTL 66.36 million, the revenues, received by the alternative public fixed telecommunications providers amounted to LTL 4.70 million or 7.08 per cent. Compared to the previous quarter, the total revenues, received by fixed telecommunications providers, decreased by 2.0 per cent and the alternative providers’ revenues grew by 2.7 per cent. Compared to the 3rd quarter of 2010, in the 3rd quarter of 2011 the total revenues decreased by 10.7 per cent and the alternative providers’ revenues grew by 3.6 per cent.
In the 3rd quarter of 2011 the total electronic communications market (in terms of revenues from provision of fixed communications networks and services, mobile communications networks and services, leased lines services, Internet access and other data communication services, dark fibre services, television services, radio and television programmes transmission services, wire radio activities and electronic communications network interconnection) amounted to LTL 598.08 million. Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2011, the market decreased by 1.3 per cent and comparing the 3rd quarter of 2011 with the 3rd quarter of 2010, it decreased by 9.2 per cent.
Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2011, in the 3rd quarter of 2011 the investments into the electronic communications network infrastructure decreased by 14.3 per cent and amounted to LTL 80.79 million. Comparing the 3rd quarter of 2011 with the 3rd quarter of 2010, the investments into the electronic communications network infrastructure grew by 20.1 per cent.
At the end of the 3rd quarter of 2011 the broadband penetration (i. e. the number of subscribers per 100 population) reached 29.8 per cent and during the quarter it grew by 1.3 percentage points and by 3.6 percentage points during the year.
In the 3rd quarter of 2011 the number of subscribers, using Internet access services, provided over fibre lines grew by 5.2 per cent (17.0 thousand new connections), during the year it grew by 17.7 per cent, correspondingly the number of subscribers, using wireless communication lines, grew by 5.4 cent during the quarter (5.2 thousand new connections) and by 21.7 per cent during the year. The number of subscribers, connecting over mobile telecommunication networks by using a computer grew by 8.3 per cent during the 3rd quarter (18.3 thousand new connections) and by 28.0 per cent during the year.
During the 3rd quarter the number of active public mobile telecommunication service subscribers (i. e. the number of SIM cards) grew by 1.1 per cent and at the end of the quarter amounted to 4.93 million, i. e. 153.6 subscribers per 100 population and during the year the number grew by 0.7 per cent. Compared to the previous quarter in the 3rd quarter of 2011 the number of active mobile telecommunication subscribers, who used the UMTS (third generation public mobile telecommunication network) services grew by 26.1 per cent and reached 1077.5 thousand, including 4.5 thousand subscribers, who used public mobile telecommunication video-calls services, provided over the UMTS network (14.6 per cent less than during the previous quarter).
Compared to the 2nd quarter of 2011, the volume of data, sent and received in the 3rd quarter of 2011 by using the packet data communication services, provided over mobile telecommunication networks (GPRS and EDGE and/or UMTS), grew by 3.5 per cent and reached 1525.3 million MB. Comparing the 3rd quarter of 2011 with the 3rd quarter of 2010, the volume of the sent and received data grew by 44.9 per cent.
Before the end of the 3rd quarter of 2011 the number portability service was used by 638.0 thousand mobile telecommunication subscribers (13.0 per cent of the total number of active mobile telecommunication subscribers), 26.0 thousand numbers was transferred during the 3rd quarter of 2011, i. e. 4.1 per cent more than during the 2nd quarter of 2011. Before the end of the 3rd quarter of 2011 the number portability service was used by 20.4 thousand fixed telecommunication subscribers (2.8 per cent of the total number of fixed telecommunication subscribers), 1.0 thousand fixed telecommunication numbers were transferred during the 3rd quarter, i. e. 20.2 per cent less than during the 2nd quarter of 2011.
