CRA: SHORT NUMBER 111 FOR THE RED CROSS

September 19, 2023

One application has been received since 1 September, when the Communications Regulatory Authority (CRA) made it possible for non-profit organisations to use the short number 111 if they provide humanitarian, social or other related assistance. The Lithuanian Red Cross Society has expressed its willingness to administer the short code.

“The short number 111 has so far not been able to be assigned and used by anyone. However, in a time of economic and social challenges, humanitarian, social or other assistance could be made available more quickly and easily.  We believe that an easy-to-remember number like 111 will contribute to the coordination of such assistance,” says Jorūnė Mikulėnaitė-Baušienė, Head of Electronic Communications Resource Management Group of the CRA.

Telephone numbers are a public resource and are allocated in accordance with established procedures. More than 10.3 million numbers have been issued in Lithuania, most of which are mobile numbers.

In order to define the purpose of the short number 111, the CRA consulted publicly in July and adopted amendments to the relevant legislation. The CRA subsequently informed that any eligible organisation that sees a need for such a number can apply to the CRA. If only one organisation applied within the deadline, the number was allocated to the first and only applicant.
