A domain means the name, formed of a sequence of letters, digits an other characters, coming before the part of the highest level domain ”.lt”, identifying the point in the Internet network.

The IP address means the unique number, used for a unique identification of the sender and recipient of the data packets. It is rather difficult to remember IP addresses – a person tends to remember different names more easily. Therefore different names (for instance old.www.rrt.lt) are more frequently used on the Internet and software detect the IP addresses, assigned to the names. For this purpose the Domain Name System, relating the digital IP addresses with the names of domains is used.

Domains are classified according to their hierarchy:

  • A domain of the highest level is the country code, for instance ”.lt”
  • A domain of the second level is specified before the domain of the highest level, for instance www.old.www.rrt.lt.
  • A domain of the third level is specified before the domain of the second level, for instance www.numeracija.rrt.lt, and so on.

The domains with the ”.eu” ending are registered according to the domain registration rules, established by EURID at http://www.eurid.eu/.

The administration of Lithuanian domains, i. e. the Internet names with the ”.lt” ending is Information Technologies Development Institute under Kaunas Technologies University.
